"To get to where you want to go in your chosen field, be prepared to use all the tricks in your bag: a willingness to work harder than anyone else in the room; an openness to chance and unexpected opportunity; the ability to seize that opportunity when it presents itself. Most of all, never forget the fundamental art of being friendly, because you never know when someone you've met in an elevator, reception room, or at a movie screening will give you an essential tip or key recommendation - or appear on the other side of the desk in a job interview."
Or is it Seconded? While waiting for classes and employment to start I have been catching up on some emails and reading. My current book of choice The Joys of Much too Much by Bonnie Fuller, editorial director of American Media.
The book so far is really telling about her Fashion Freeway and I am loving it, but what I love even more is when someone who has made it to the top of the fashion industry totally agrees with something I wrote in my blog.
In chapter 2 Embrace Your Inner Canadian, there is a section titled "Keep Your Options Open at All Times and Don't Give Up Forging Connections".
Bonnie talks about how she was ready for another challenge and began contacting other Editors-in-Chief like herself to see if they knew of available opportunities in the industry. She ends the section by saying:
"It was when I started connecting with some of my peers that things started to click for me. I was viewing them as future colleagues rather than as holders of the key to the magic kingdom. "
Other notable quotables that I love and have applied to my life:
"Under no circumstances, face the facts" - this is so true. Right now my facts say that I am in no way going to make it at FIDM with no job and little financial aid, but....if I faced the facts I would be a very real stereotype in Ohio right now.
"By now you've turned your inner fear into your most potent weapon. You're afraid not to succeed, so you keep trying until you do." - enough said.
So far this book is a great read and I will keep you updated on any other notable quotables. Also look out for posts on my job and school situation, as well as how broadening your horizons helps your Freeway. Happy Travels!
That's right thanks to Craigslist, StyleCareers, and soon the career fair at FIDM. I am getting offers and it's nice to have options, but what I would like to talk about is know what you are worth.
For anyone who has been long term unemployed any job offer is a Godsend and we end up taking the first one that comes and end up miserable. That has happened to me more times than I can count and left me in a worse position than when I was unemployed. So there are three points that I want to make so you don't end up like me:
The First Offer is not Always the Best Offer - If you know you applied to many different places and you still have not heard back from your number one choice it's okay to wait it out. But wait smart, don't let the other interviewers know that you are looking at other places, when you are offered the job ask them how soon do they need an answer, most places are lenient but if they pressure you for an answer right away ask for 48 hours and call your first choice for an update. Tell them that you are calling "Just to touch bases and answer any further questions they (name the person that interviewed you) may have" After 48 hours feel free to accept the other job offer if you still have not heard from your first choice.
It's Okay to Move On or Keep Looking - Now what happens when you receive that job offer from your first choice after you have accepted the offer from another company? Weigh your options and be honest with yourself. If you will be in a better position to move on do so. This also applies for if you are unhappy with your current position. There is no harm in looking while still employed or taking on an unpaid internship position that will help get you to your Point B while your current job pays the bills until you can move on.
Happy Travels and feel free to share your experiences I want your opinions.

I finally made it! I took three days but I am here in Los Angeles and am ready to start my career. One of my decisions was to fly or drive and we chose to drive. It took three days but we made it! We stopped at a Motel 6 or Super 8 between days and let me just say that the Rocky Mountains are beautiful but I will not be driving through them again anytime soon . But here are some of the things that I learned on the trip:
- Follow the Detour
- Colorado Exit 119 - No Name
- Connectors
Follow the Detour
There isn't anyone here in the United States that is not familiar with or affected by Hurricane Ike. The whole midwest was either flooded or lost power and that included Indiana, part of Illinois, and southern Iowa; right in the middle of our driving route.
In Indiana I-80 West was closed for miles and we were to follow the detour that was set by the city. Instead of following the detour and my GPS system we decided to go our own way and try what was best. What we thought was best ended up in a three hour delay in our travel.
Lesson: Follow the Detour, when you try to go your own way you get lost and off track. But when you follow the detoure even if it doesn't look right it gets you to exactly where you need to be a lot faster than you would have gotten yourself.

No Name Exit
I was driving through the Rocky's so I couldn't get a picture of this exit but it's there. At first I was frustrated with this I kept thinking "How is anyone supposed to know where I am if it's No Name?! An exit needs a name!" But does it? Does it really need a name if it serves it's purpose of allowing the traveler to regroup? Besides it was in the middle of the mountians with no residential area so it's not like you could live there, at one point you have to keep moving along your journey.
Lesson: When you need to regroup it's okay to exit at No Name just as long as you don't try to live there.

Connectors
I had a very long talk with a friend who moved out on the west coast a little over a year ago, and she was saying to me how surprised she was at how when you are in a new place you find yourself contacting people that you would have otherwise never spoken to such as third cousins, relatives of friends, and other pseudo strangers.
Lesson: We already know that life is not a straight line and that connectors can get us to where we need to be. Stay open to those who may do just that.

Just recently I shared with you a Minute Motivation about changing directions but still getting to your Point B. Recently I bought a GPS system for my car so that when I get to LA I am not lost. Well I have found that I have special powers and can manage to get lost even with a GPS system. But it has this cool feature that when I am going in the wrong direction not following it's instructions it will redirect my route. The system uses the streets and the area around me to still get me to where I need to go. It may take a little longer but I still make it to where I need to be, and miraculously on time!
Sometimes while riding along our freeway we get distracted and stop listening to where our career GPS systems are trying to tell us and we go in the wrong direction but life has a way of using the environment around us to "redirect" our lives so that we end up at the correct Point B. This can be in the form of:
- A degree that is in a field for which you have no passion, but you have established a much needed work ethic and a higher level of education that will still make you that much more marketable
- A job that you consider "dead-end" but you have gotten what you don't want to do out of the way which will help you focus on what you DO want to do to build a career.
- Bad credit due to various reasons, but that slows you down to find alternative and creative ways of getting things done and paying for the big things in your life.
- A child, the best motivator to redirect and give that child a better life
- Getting Fired. Depending on the reason of dismissal, this could help push you to start that dream company or go back to school, or whatever it is that was in the back of your head while you were with your previous employer. And if there was no idea in the back of your head then this forces you to get inside yourself and create one!
I hope this helps to push you along sometimes we feel like we are too far gone and way off track to get back to our freeways but I say just sit back and let life's GPS system take over. Route Redirected!
Do Not Change Your Decision to Go, Change Your Direction
You've got your dream. You've set your goal. You're read to get started and then you encounter difficulty. Don't change your decision to go, just change your path to get there. Numerous paths can lead to each goal. For example, if you're on your way to work and you come to a street that is closed, do you give up and go back home? No! You find another street that's open or another route to get to work. With your goal, if you encounter difficulty, don't change your decision to go; change your direction to get there.

I know post have been pretty scarce lately and that has everything to do with the fact that I am working on getting things together for school. I am less than 5 days away from moving across country to California in a situation that looks what most would call impossible.
My life is a totally Construction Zone and the blog will be looking the same as well. The focus will still be the same it's all about getting from Point A to Point B in our fashion careers but until I get settled the posts may be less frequent. I am going to shoot for two posts a week. Also when I first created the mantra No Fear, Just DIVA, the "A" stood for Apparel but now I would like to change it to Affirmation because more and more I have saying affirmations to myself while trying to put some order to my journey. So here is where I stand:
- Still owe 12,756 dollars to FIDM
- Connected with temp agencies to get some work out in LA
- Hostel bound for a place to stay until I can afford otherwise
I am up against this but if I can make it through it that will make my Point B all the more worthwhile and I hope motivate you to get out there and start your journey no matter what obstacles may be in your way.
One Step Forward, Just Glance Back. No Fear, Just DIVA
Hello Readers!
I have been very busy since I touched down from South Korea and my main goal is making my Point B a reality.
This week my aunt let me borrow her book "It Only Takes a Minute to Change Your Life" by Wille Jolley (remember "A Jolley Good Strategy"). In this book Jolley provides Motivational Minutes that only take but a minute to read but really keep you pushing along your journey. I want to share some with you at least one a week because sometimes our freeways can seem to be a lot harder to travel when we loose motivation.
California or Bust
What is the essential ingredient that can propel a person to success? What is the special key that can unlock untold doors? What is the tool that can help mold your future? Well, it's simple yet greatly misused and misunderstood. It is a goal. A goal is a dream with at time frame attached to it. Goals are stepping stones to reach our dreams. If we can concentrate on goals, learn how to set them and how to reach them, we can reach exceptional heights. The pioneers during the Gold Rush had the goal of reaching California. They had a saying: "California or Bust!" They had a dream, set a time to achieve it, and then do it. This is one of my favorite sayings: "It is the carrot in front of the horse's face that makes it want to run the race!" Run fast and run hard and enjoy the rewards that are set in front of your face!
Happy Travels!
