Strengths: Delegating. I really liked being the team leader and assigning project parts according to their strengths and talents.
Weakness: If it’s not done to my standards I will do it myself.
Weakness: Details. I want the basic facts and I don’t read through the whole syllabus.
Observation: I will be able to pick out a great assistant.
Strength: I can see the big picture. Also now that I know I can put that into application next quarter.
Observation: I am the new Elle Woods. But in reverse. Elle at Harvard is me at FIDM. In business school I was the creative one, in fashion school I am all business - who knew!
I am dealing with a whole different skill set at FIDM. I am consistently being taken out of my element and I need to work on my recovery time. I let some things fall to the way side and I am using this vacation time to pick things back up and take a look at my life and time management from the outside. I really thought that I would be taking business classes only – using my head, not my hands. To be effective in the fashion industry you have to know how to use both, well.
Good luck Travelers and I will see you next quarter!
So here are the rules:
7 Things About Me you didn't already know
Tag 7 people to follow
I am going to do two of them so you will get 14! One will be posted here and the other at ASOP.
- I wish I could be just like Beyonce when it comes to talking about relationships. When I like a guy the whole world knows!
- I miss taking ballet classes
- I've been entertaining the idea of hiring an assistant
- I want to work for the national office of my sorority sometime around the age of 40
- I want to dabble in Product Placement for emerging artists and get them in big movies such as Devil Wears Prada or Sex and the City, or shows like Lipstick Jungle or Ugly Betty.
- I think my self-esteem resides in my hair. I went natural back in 2007 and am on a mission to grow my hair healthy and long (or a really big big b i g fro).
- I want 7 ladybugs tattooed on me at some point, but I'm trying to figure out exactly where so that they remain discreet in the corporate world. I already have two...5 more to go

Go!
I know right! I am reading another book! But what can I say? The eternal book worm, I need to read something for enhancement all times and I ran across this book in the library Wednesday. Perfect timing!
Most of you know that besides this blog I write for AndSpeakingOfPink and Style-ology Magazine; both have a very different target audience and require very different writing styles. Then we have NFJD - me along my Freeway. Only here is a ramble acceptable. Or is it? Just recently my Chief made a good point to her writers that our writing must be "exceptional" not just good: we the writers represent her the business so I had to turn it to language I understand. BRANDING!
We are the face of her brand and the quality of our writing affects her Brand Equity. Our current target audience is known for short attention spans and no second chances so a positive Brand Association is important. LOL I am trying to relate it to my classes. If I am totally off base please feel free to correct me. This is the only way I will learn.
Anywhoo, saying all that to say I understand the sentiment and that has been something that I have thought about with my blog too. This blog is the face of MY brand. This brands essence is my essence. Fearless, Fashionable, Vision. Kimora Lee Simmons says "I am turning my brand into a lifestyle" and that is what I want, so what is it that I can do as a blogger to make sure that this blog reflects that while still being the outlet I need along my Freeway?
My main goal for creating this blog was to chart my journey while helping others discover theirs and hear the stories of those who made it to their Point B. I also wanted to add in any cool articles that I come across along the way. Lastly I wanted this to be a place to go to look for jobs and internships in the industry. Sometimes its tiring to go to so many different sites at one time so I wanted my blog to also bee the one stop shop for posted jobs and internships. Am I providing that? Kinda....Not to the standards I would like honestly.
So I'm working on being that .06% and weeding out the noise post by post. I am excited to see where this blog takes me...thank you for coming along my journey and I can't wait to hear about yours!

That will be for this blog of course which I will try to put up at the top, maybe some time this weekend.
And then we have:
FTI by Lucky Anaiya
Which I am thinking of for a company logo overall. In building an empire I am trying to figure out exactly what I am building when I know so will you.
Off to class! Happy Travels and let me know what you think. Many of your are business owners so you know and understand the importance of a proper logo for your brand. I trust you!
The silver lining to moving to Atlanta was that I LOVE the city! I totally could see myself back there and I was able to see a real need and want for growth in the fashion industry and a global presence there so maybe it was a way of forecasting for my life??? Only time will tell.
This built back up my courage and I quickly got on Skype, borrowed a friends credit card and applied for FIDM on the spot. I did all my entrance projects, scholarship projects, phone interviews, etc, from South Korea many times at 2 or 3 AM my time because of the time difference.
To be sure that I was making the right decision I did more research on schools like SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) and FIT one more time and honestly FIDM just seem to have the most well rounded program that was straight to the point and catered to those with a previous degree. More on that in a minute, because initially I was a bit ignorant of what exactly my classes would entail. I really thought I would only be studying the business of fashion. So not true....
I am at FIDM as a Merchandise Product Development major. What does that mean? Well that means I take both design and business classes. I learn to sketch, sew, and predict next years sales. FIDM is the only school to offer this diverse of a program, and even the faculty say that it is the most well-rounded. I am a bit more right brain than left so working with my hands have proven to be a challenge for me, but I love it. I am being taught and trained to be a Brand Manager, Trend Analyst, Assistant Designer, or Fabric Buyer. Click here for more career options with this major. At the end of the program there is a corporate sponsor such as Forever 21 or Nordstroms and the students are to create a product line for them (ie, bags, shoes, dresses, coats), and present it with textile (fabric) and color samples, measurements of each individual product, the target customer and their lifestyle, and next years' sales predictions.
I used this image on AndSpeakingofPink.com to explain to the readers there more of what I am learning to execute in the industry. For most of my readers here they are working in the industry and understand what this image means to Product Development. (by the way I got this from a Google Search)
But for those of you who don't really know much about the major or FIDM check it out, click the links above and try these as well:
FIDM Fast Track - for HS juniors interested in attending FIDM
Fashion Club- FIDM's fun site
Check them out I really think you will like what you find. And for those thinking of applying to FIDM trust me when I say it's never too late and it's never too early. If it's your dream go for it and don't let anyone slow your journey like I let others slow mine.
Happy Travels!

Okay now I need to run and get to sketching. When I get back I plan on having some great stories to tell you and some revelations I recently experienced. Have a great and productive weekend and week, I know I plan too! Happy Travels!

So for study purposes I feel this post is great practice for my mid term and an A in this class. So let's begin with the brands I chose:Brand Equity
- Everything associated with the brand that
ADDS or SUBTRACTS from the value it provides to a product or service
Brand Associations
-Anything a consumer associates with a
brand in his or her mind
Right......now let's talk about the ads above and how they relate to the terms.
Brand Equity-
For both right now I think that these images SUBTRACT from the brands greatly with the whole idea of our society being too oversexed introducing mature clothing and faux high heels to young girls and infants may present the wrong message to consumers.
Brand Associations-
I can tell by the Dereon Girls advertisement there was supposed to be a sense of "playing dress up" but I think the marketers missed the boat when they gave the little girl heels that actually fit her feet! I think that to list what these images would be associated with in the consumer's mind would be a bit harsh, so I will leave that to your imagination.
So what do you think? How can these brands ADD to their Equity and create positive associations? I am going to think about that and get back to you after midterms. I just wanted to get a conversation going.
Happy Travels!
For example one of my favorite blogs The Fashion Bomb features a great section Breaking into Fashion. It's one of my favorite sections on the blog; read my interview with the creator here. In the most recent post the interviewee made a comment that having a great outfit is not enough to get you to make it in the business and went on dropping names that I am not familiar with so what did I do? Googled them duh! I don't know these people but what I do know is that someone who is currently at my potential Point B feels them important enough to say that knowledge of these people and their works can get you on the short list to employment. She also stated that having well rounded industry knowledge can have a great impact on career building. Go to the site and read the whole interview, but the point I am making for this post is this:
-Don't embarrassed if you don't know, just ask. They never lied when they said close mouths don't get fed, it's the same with your mind.
-Have enough PASSION about your Freeway and reaching your Point B to do some research on your own. TAKE INITIATIVE!
-Kill the excuses. You are the only one responsible for your success or failure, so let's make it the former.
Let me give you some examples of things that I totally had to look up:
- Flagship Stores - definition
- Fashion Group International
- Rag and Bones clothing
Happy Travels and get to Filling those Cracks!

Before coming to LA and FIDM I joined Facebook groups, subscribed to blogs and sites by alumni and watch Project Runway and The Hills (insert eye roll and sarcastic comment here)-like no body's business. But there is nothing like talking to an alumni directly about the ups and downs of being a student and trying to break into the industry.
I am a Merchandise Product Development major and while browsing a discussion on fb my attention was grabbed by Product Development alum T.L. White who's comment is now the title of this post. Remember my Road Maps interview with FIDM Alum Stacie Rutherford, Apparel Manufacturing major? Read it again here.
Both alumna stress that fact that our program is intense and a lot of hard work - and I totally agree. I have already had two quizzes in two of my classes and two projects next week for my Brand Development and Textile Science classes. 6 hours a week is recommended for my sketching class and my last quiz proves it to be needed, and I know that once the sewing part of Apparel Process I (one) starts I will be focusing on that too.
T.L. White had some great words of wisdom that I have cut and paste here with her permission. Read and Learn:
T.L. White:
I will start off by saying that whether you go to FIDM or not you really have to know that fashion is truly what you want to do and its not just a hobby. Many people will go to FIDM for a year or less and then drop out.
I got all of my great jobs through Cragislist, and having the FIDM name definitly gets you through the door ahead of others. You have to intern for well known companies and you can go anywhere after that.
Me:
Did you intern during your time with the company you are currently with or with others that helped you decide to work in the position you currently hold?
T.L. White:
Then about 5 months ago, I started looking for a part time position back in the industry on craigslist and found a posting for Ed Hardy Shoes for the exact position I was looking for. It was too perfect for words. I was so estatic and wanted the job so bad because I knew I was perfect for it. I love where I work!
But after reading your blog....I should say that....more like stress, many people can make it in this industry by just knowing people and getting jobs that way. I never wanted to be that way...I know many people that could get me into many awesome positions in Hollywood but you really only appreciate a job truly, when you worked for it yourself. Take it, when I did go back, everyone welcomed me back and I was the 1st intern to ever come back and get an actually job with them. But I had that drive to make it happen.
*=This is only if you do not have a previous degree. If you have a previous degree you are entered into the Professional Designation Program and take only major courses. Some of which can be transferred depending on your previous curriculum.
I am very grateful for this information and I know that many of you out there can benefit from it even if you aren't a FIDM student. Leave a Stamp and have a great weekend. I'm off to do my projects. Happy Travels!
The story of how it all happened will come later in another post. I really want to highlight some lessons learned during this 6 hour experience. For each hour there is a new lesson learned:
-Before I ever stepped foot in California or even thought of applying to FIDM I knew that I wanted to work for Kimora Lee Simmons and Baby Phat in some form and on more than one occasion I wrote it down and talked about it to the point that my friends could probably recite my dreams and drive by heart.
-I have to honor my friend and fellow classmate who made this possible by thinking of me on a day she just happened to be going to the showrooms (more on that later).
-I remember the first day of class when my friend said that she used to work for the Phat Farm show rooms and I blurted out "What I'm the BIGGEST Kimora Lee Simmons fan ever!" everyone laughed at that but she took my passion seriously, and to her I am grateful.
-Once I met my now current employers I was not afraid to let them know my passion for the brand and it's CEO. I was also very clear about my long-term goals and where I would like to take my career.
-My story will have funny anecdotes about this experience but always try to dress your best. An outfit that will go from day to evening even if you are just going to class is always best. I have only been in school for a little under three weeks and have been in front of, or around cameras almost each week. (just last week they were shooting Prison Break at the park on campus and looking for extras)
-People love to talk about themselves and what they do. Also I have found that there are people who are just as clueless, if not more so, as you. I was actually at the launching of the Baby Phat showroom where people didn't even know who Kimora Lee Simmons was!
Ask me what I do and insert the obligatory smile and nod. I officially start next week so I will keep you updated on my lessons learned. And stay tuned to the full story of how this all happened.
For those who don't know me I have gotten comments like "Wow you are lucky!" or "What dumb luck!" So please take note:
This is not dumb luck I have wanted this for a long time!
When you want something bad enough line yourself up and the events and people in your life to make it happen! Read the "Lessons of the Hour" and go for it! You know the motto:
"One Step Forward, Just Glance Back! No Fear, Just DIVA"
*Please understand this is in no means my Point B and I am still traveling along my Freeway, but this is just letting me know that I am going in the right direction.
I have some serious adjusting to do with the new schedule and I would like to see some changes in my blog. So until I can sit down and get this thing looking the way I want giving the same message of finding your Fashion Freeway as I find mine I need you all to bear with me for a bit. Like a week or two.....Until then Happy Travels!
Or is it Seconded? While waiting for classes and employment to start I have been catching up on some emails and reading. My current book of choice The Joys of Much too Much by Bonnie Fuller, editorial director of American Media.
The book so far is really telling about her Fashion Freeway and I am loving it, but what I love even more is when someone who has made it to the top of the fashion industry totally agrees with something I wrote in my blog.
In chapter 2 Embrace Your Inner Canadian, there is a section titled "Keep Your Options Open at All Times and Don't Give Up Forging Connections".
Bonnie talks about how she was ready for another challenge and began contacting other Editors-in-Chief like herself to see if they knew of available opportunities in the industry. She ends the section by saying:
"It was when I started connecting with some of my peers that things started to click for me. I was viewing them as future colleagues rather than as holders of the key to the magic kingdom. "
Other notable quotables that I love and have applied to my life:
"Under no circumstances, face the facts" - this is so true. Right now my facts say that I am in no way going to make it at FIDM with no job and little financial aid, but....if I faced the facts I would be a very real stereotype in Ohio right now.
"By now you've turned your inner fear into your most potent weapon. You're afraid not to succeed, so you keep trying until you do." - enough said.
So far this book is a great read and I will keep you updated on any other notable quotables. Also look out for posts on my job and school situation, as well as how broadening your horizons helps your Freeway. Happy Travels!
For anyone who has been long term unemployed any job offer is a Godsend and we end up taking the first one that comes and end up miserable. That has happened to me more times than I can count and left me in a worse position than when I was unemployed. So there are three points that I want to make so you don't end up like me:
- Know Your Worth
- The First Offer is not Always the Best Offer
- It's Okay to Move On (or Keep Looking)
The First Offer is not Always the Best Offer - If you know you applied to many different places and you still have not heard back from your number one choice it's okay to wait it out. But wait smart, don't let the other interviewers know that you are looking at other places, when you are offered the job ask them how soon do they need an answer, most places are lenient but if they pressure you for an answer right away ask for 48 hours and call your first choice for an update. Tell them that you are calling "Just to touch bases and answer any further questions they (name the person that interviewed you) may have" After 48 hours feel free to accept the other job offer if you still have not heard from your first choice.
It's Okay to Move On or Keep Looking - Now what happens when you receive that job offer from your first choice after you have accepted the offer from another company? Weigh your options and be honest with yourself. If you will be in a better position to move on do so. This also applies for if you are unhappy with your current position. There is no harm in looking while still employed or taking on an unpaid internship position that will help get you to your Point B while your current job pays the bills until you can move on.
Happy Travels and feel free to share your experiences I want your opinions.
- Follow the Detour
- Colorado Exit 119 - No Name
- Connectors
In Indiana I-80 West was closed for miles and we were to follow the detour that was set by the city. Instead of following the detour and my GPS system we decided to go our own way and try what was best. What we thought was best ended up in a three hour delay in our travel.
Lesson: Follow the Detour, when you try to go your own way you get lost and off track. But when you follow the detoure even if it doesn't look right it gets you to exactly where you need to be a lot faster than you would have gotten yourself.
Lesson: When you need to regroup it's okay to exit at No Name just as long as you don't try to live there.
Lesson: We already know that life is not a straight line and that connectors can get us to where we need to be. Stay open to those who may do just that.
- A degree that is in a field for which you have no passion, but you have established a much needed work ethic and a higher level of education that will still make you that much more marketable
- A job that you consider "dead-end" but you have gotten what you don't want to do out of the way which will help you focus on what you DO want to do to build a career.
- Bad credit due to various reasons, but that slows you down to find alternative and creative ways of getting things done and paying for the big things in your life.
- A child, the best motivator to redirect and give that child a better life
- Getting Fired. Depending on the reason of dismissal, this could help push you to start that dream company or go back to school, or whatever it is that was in the back of your head while you were with your previous employer. And if there was no idea in the back of your head then this forces you to get inside yourself and create one!
- Still owe 12,756 dollars to FIDM
- Connected with temp agencies to get some work out in LA
- Hostel bound for a place to stay until I can afford otherwise
"It's not the hand you dealt but how you playing your cards"
As of this post I am on my way home back to the US of A! My year in Korea has taught me a lot that I plan to put into practice in my new career in fashion and I will update more information about that later.
I am not sure how long it will be until the next post since I will be adjusting to the 13 hour difference and I need to purchase a new laptop - the one I have been posting on was my school's. This is a great time to read up on past posts and get reacquainted with my blog, leave comments, subscribe, send in suggestions, or request a Road Map interview!
When I get back I will fill you all in on my quest to get a student loan to cover the rest of school and where I go from there! Until then...
"One Step Forward, Just Glance Back. No Fear, Just DIVA!"
Today's travel music is all about dreaming big. They are songs that I just like for the moment that have a No Fear, Just DIVA vibe to them especially at a time when I am a bit down about my current need money for college situation. We all can dream so sit back watch and Dream Big.
"Had all the pieces to that puzzle just no way to connect it"
Face
Everything
And
Recover
and when I am not chanting No Fear Just DIVA I am reminding myself to Face Everything And Recover. I am pleasantly surprised every time at the results when I use these so I am hoping that this time will be no different.
We all have times when we avoid something because we are afraid to fail or be let down or see our dreams get shattered in front of our faces. For me readers, that is applying for student loans. I am scared to death of not getting the funding that I need to pay off the rest of my education to a school that I have wanted to attend for the past four years. Fear kept me from applying directly out of undergrad and Pride is what put me in the current situation that is causing Fear now. So what am I talking about? Credit. Plain and simple Credit. I am putting myself out there and I hope that this will help someone else in the long-run.
The short version of this story is that I was not trying to live the glamorous life, I was just trying to support myself on my own without a proper financial back up plan. I left my hometown and moved to Atlanta and was mismanaging my money for a while and abusing my cellphone for a job that I thought I could write the whole bill off in taxes (so not the case). I lost my job and had a hard time keeping another one - my problem was accepting any job that would hire me even if it wasn't a good fit. Eventually I was able to find a job through a temp agency. I should have moved out of my apt into a smaller one or moved back home with my mother but I didn't. I chose to try to stick it out - bad idea but pride wouldn't let me go home so I paid for it with my credit.
Moving to Korea was on of the best decisions I could have made financially because I was able to work and travel and pay off the big stuff, but still not without seeing a significant drop in my credit score and some stuff that wont come off until 2015. Trust me I am hurting but my situation is causing me to get creative in finding avenues to pursue my dream of a career in fashion and attending FIDM in the fall. One of the upsides to my lack of employment was the amount of aid I was awarded and that is enough to keep me going.
I recently applied for a pre-approval for about half the amount that I need and was shut down. It killed my confidence for a while but I decided that I will apply in person when I get back home to the States. However with big companies such as Wachovia and Bank of America stopping funding for private student loans I am a bit nervous. I know that with FIDM I can pay the amount in a 6 month payment plan but when I don't have a job or place to live the loans are the only back up plan - so what now?
I will go to locations and have face to face conversations with lenders and ask my family if anyone is willing to be a cosigner. One thing that living in Atlanta has taught me is recognize and accept a lost cause and don't let your pride get in the way of your credit, so I do not plan on moving out there on a wing and a prayer.
I am also considering scholarships but I am in a weird place because I am no longer an "Undergraduate" and this degree at FIDM is after my BA but it's not a "Graduate" degree, still I have not ruled them out and I have applied for a few of those too. I will continue to do my research and keep you updated.
Readers know this - Your Freeway is your own and only you know what Point B you want to be your destination. Don't let anything like credit, a child, bankruptcy, or whatever else it may be hold you back. Face it! Just because the scenery isn't what you expected doesn't mean the destination isn't worth the trip.
"One Step Forward, Just Glance Back. No Fear, Just DIVA!"
I read this article in WWD* giving very sound advice on how to keep your business afloat during this recession the US had found itself in. I know that a good number of my readers are business owners and are still building their brand so I recommend reading this article in its entirety. It is 11 pages but it is totally worth it. I am not going to recap all 10 of their Business Health Plan points, but some of the highlights of the article are listed below for Business Owners and Job Seekers/Employees.
2.) Be Conservative with Sales and Inventory + 7.) Re-time Shipments to Mitigate Markdowns
-These points relate, they both emphasize that More Inventory = Less Money, but if your business finds itself in merchandise excess right now a sale can't be a bad thing. Many designers and boutique owners have complained about shipments coming too soon before the season and customers are not buying what they can't wear at the moment. (From a consumer stand point I'm not going to make a purchase today that I cannot wear until months from now ) However, if your shelves are looking a little bear then consider "seasonless" collections. More information about this new trend that is showing up on the runways of many major labels can be found in these articles:
3.) Step Up Leadership 4.) Provide More Value & Differentiate
- In my interview with Staci Rutherford of the Handbag Report she mentioned that her courses at FIDM taught her the process that accessories go through before making it to the store. Little times I think consumers take into consideration the cost that goes into a garment from the shipping of textiles, to the manufacturing, and then paying for human capital, to the pricing so that the designer/brand can make a profit let a lone break even. High quality mean high price, but this point warns the company not to pass that increase in cost on to it's customer who is facing some of the same financial challenges and is likely to be unwilling to pay more for that company's product.
Other Notables:
- Take a second look at your target market and where the money is coming from-Baby Boomers still have disposable income
- "Don't follow the leader; Be Bold" (in other words No Fear Just DIVA) - but those creative risks shouldn't put you in the red. What are some economical ways to make your company stand out above the rest?
Business owners are advised to find creative ways to differentiate themselves from other companies...well that is where you need to come in! Companies are trying to save as much money as they can right now and even senior level employees are losing their jobs. Now is the time to present your best ideas.
That presentation you have been working on during your lunch hour, that campaign slogan you came up with while on your morning jog, or that "It would work a lot better/save the company a lot of money if/make more sense to..." comment to your friends during dinner, now is the time to tell them to the people who really matter. If you are currently working in a job you love be indispensable!!! In Point #1 the advice given to senior level management was to ask themselves "What would happen if that person were hit by a bus tomorrow morning?" and if the company could still function then it's okay to get rid of that position. Is your company asking that about you? Losing your job is just as good as getting hit by a bus right now.
On the upside now is also a great time to build your wardrobe with come classic pieces that can help build your professional work wardrobe at a discounted cost. Not all business put Points 2 and 7 into practice and have more merchandise than they can successfully sell at full price. Tim Gunn created a list of what every woman should have in her wardrobe and this site breaks it down; read it and take it out with you to these sales. Buy items that have longevity and spending more on quality now will prove wise in the current hard financial times.

The title caught my attention so I looked it up on Amazon. One of the best features on Amazon is the "Search Inside" where you can read excerpts of the book and that is how the hook baited the fish:
You know those maps in shopping malls that say 'You Are Here'? They exist to orient you in unfamiliar territory, to tell you where you are, where you want to go, and how to get there.
Now is that not what No Fear, Just DIVA is all about!?
